Construction begins on ‘Recovery Café’

Construction has begun on Dove House’s Recovery Café, at 939 Kearney Street in Port Townsend.

Grant money allowed Dove House to purchase the building that was previously home to Candace’s Cookies last summer. Now, after the permitting process took longer than expected, construction crews can finally start work, said Brian Richardson, director of the Recovery Café.

PORT TOWNSEND — Structural renovations to the Dove House Recovery Cafe are set to begin Monday, and organizers are seeking volunteers.

Recovery Cafe program manager Brian Richardson received the permits to start the construction Tuesday, and the team was reviewing the blueprints together Friday.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Dove House Recovery Cafe is expected to open in September to provide help for recovering drug addicts.

Dove House Advocacy Services closed on the purchase of the building at 939 Kearney St., in July after entering into a purchase agreement in April.

The building at 939 Kearney Street in Port Townsend was the home of Candace’s Cookies for many years. Now, it is planned to be a Recovery Cafe, to support those in recovery from substance abuse, homelessness, mental illness and trauma.

Seattle’s Recovery Cafe started in 2004, but it moved to a larger space in 2009. “We are able to serve about 350 people per month,” said David Uhl, director of the Recovery Cafe Network. “We know that our members are reporting that they’re drinking less, having less encounters with the legal system, and are part of a community.”  ​​
